We called 351 Manhattan practices after hours. 4% reached a person.
The short version
Between 6:00 and 9:00 PM ET on October 14 and 15, 2026, we placed one call to each of 351 Manhattan practices from our dental, orthodontic and med spa prospect list after their posted closing time. Here is what answered:
| What happened | Practices | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Went to voicemail | 242 | 68.9% |
| Automated phone menu | 61 | 17.4% |
| Rang out, no answer (~10 rings) | 34 | 9.7% |
| A live person answered | 14 | 4.0% |
| Total with a clear outcome | 351 | 100% |
96% of after-hours calls did not reach a live person.
What this means for a practice
A caller who phones after closing usually gets a recording. Whether they leave a message, call back tomorrow, or call the next practice on the list is up to them. This study did not measure what callers do next, so we make no claim about lost patients or revenue.
Methodology
- Who we called: Manhattan practices from our dental, orthodontic and med spa prospect list, one call per practice. No practice was called more than once in this sample.
- When: Wednesday, October 14 and Thursday, October 15, 2026, between 6:00 PM and 8:58 PM ET. Every call was placed after the practice's posted closing time for that day.
- How: automated outbound calls from a HaloDesk line. We did not pose as a patient, did not leave voicemails, and kept no recordings or transcripts.
- Outcome definitions: Voicemail — the call reached a voicemail greeting or answering-machine message. Phone menu — an automated menu (“press 1 for…”) answered. No answer — the phone rang about 10 times with no pickup. Live person — a human picked up (staff, an answering service, or an unidentified live answerer; we did not distinguish).
- Excluded (99 of 450 calls placed): 83 calls where the line picked up silently or hung up and we could not tell what answered, and 16 calls that did not connect (busy, declined, carrier error, or out-of-service number).
Limitations
- Manhattan only, two weeknights, one call per practice. Results may differ in other boroughs, on weekends, or later at night.
- Each practice was called once; a single call can't capture how a practice answers every night.
- “Live person” includes answering services; we did not test what happens after a person picks up.
- The practices come from our prospect list, built from public listings. It is not a random sample of all NYC practices, and we do not report an exact mix of practice types.
- Results are aggregate only. We don't publish practice names or numbers.
